The Impact of COVID-19 on Prescription Renewal Requests

People across the country are learning how to manage the difficult weeks ahead, and many have already been told to shelter in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Patients with chronic medical conditions appear to also be heeding the warnings, ensuring they have the necessary medications on hand so as not to have any disruption to their treatment during this time.

As the leader in prescription renewal workflow solutions, healthfinch regularly monitors customers’ prescription renewal metrics for efficiency trends and quality improvements. We’ve recently noticed a sizable uptick in the number of renewal requests coming through our solution, Charlie — particularly since the U.S. federal government announced states should place tighter restrictions on social gatherings and non-essential businesses, schools, and parks began closing.

Since March 15, 2020, healthfinch has seen the average weekly medication renewal volume increase by more than 30% over baseline. This increase in renewals has the potential to put a significant strain on already tight resources. Luckily, Charlie has enabled these requests to be completed quickly and, in most cases, by non-provider staff. Patients have been able to get their medications in a timely manner, allowing providers to focus on top-of-license activities like seeing patients and responding to the COVID-19 crisis. Last week, Charlie saved providers an estimated one million minutes that would have otherwise been spent tending to prescription renewal requests.

It’s possible the increase our current customers are seeing in renewal requests is echoed at your health system and other clinics across the U.S. Finding the balance between servicing existing patients and responding to the needs of this global health crisis is challenging.

healthfinch remains committed to its mission of streamlining routine, repetitive clinical tasks in order to help providers work top of license. While there is much uncertainty still surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, one thing is for sure: when all has passed, healthfinch will be here – ready to help get your providers and staff time back in their day, one prescription renewal request at a time.
