What Makes a Good Provider Champion?
Many organizations designate provider champions - providers who act as the liaison between clinical users and IT staff implementing technology - to help ensure a smooth integration into current workflows and processes. They work on behalf of providers, keeping the wants and needs of their colleagues in mind while also remaining mindful of the overall goal of the project. Different projects can have different provider champions, based on the interests of the provider, the needs of the health system, and the characteristics discussed below.

Because the success of a project can largely lie in how well it’s rolled out, choosing the right provider champion is critical. Keep these attributes in mind when considering candidates. A good provider champion should:
- Have a good rapport with other providers and staff
- Be passionate about the goal of the project
- Understand the scope of work and challenges it will solve, as well as the potential impact it will have on the health system
- Have a keen sense of where inefficiencies lie
- Be good at communicating, including possibly having tough conversations with provider colleagues
- Have the capacity and doesn’t mind the added workload required, such as extra emails and meetings
Also, it’s important to note that the role of provider champion often doesn’t end as soon as the project is completed. While the workload may decrease a bit, the champion’s continued involvement will be essential to ensuring adoption and understanding of the solution among their peers. Post-implementation, a provider champion may help by motivating colleagues, conducting regular check-ins, and monitoring key metrics to prove ROI and identify any inefficiencies that may need to be addressed.
